MOTHER AFRICA MOVEMENT

Mother Africa Movement (MAM) is a voluntary movement responding to the call of African leaders for African integration. These leaders have proposed integration in three different areas; namely, political, economica nd social.

Political Integration
Political integration aims at creating a United States of Africa. This would imply an establishment of an African government similar to that of the United States of America. The individual countries within the continent would then be states answering to one central government.

Although almost all the present leaders agree in principle that this is a welcome idea, they are however not in agreement on when this government should come be formed. The Libyan leader, Muammar Gadaffi, is said to be arguing for an immediate formation, while others think this idea should be given more time.

Economic Integration
Economic integration calls for the African states to unite for economic development of the continent. Already the continent is dotted by several regional blocks such as COMESA, EAC, SADC, ECOWAS, etc. Although these have registered noticeable success, they are however faced with some challenges.

An example of such challenges is the case of the United Republic of Tanzania in relation to the East African Community (EAC). While Kenya and Uganda are frantically pushing for the transformation of this community beyond mere trade into a political federation, Tanzania is disturbingly cautious. Therefore, even as the EAC has won the admiratio of Rwanda and Burundi, there is a real danger that Tanzania would eventually pull out completely in favour fo the southerly SADC.

Social Integration
Social integration is an effort to create an environment whereby the ordinary citizens of the continent may easily and freely associate and intermingle in whatever fora may offer them the opportunity.

Although the success of social integration may presuppose a political goodwill of the countries involved, it is practically viable even without the express political goodwill. This has been demonstrated by the various movements, organizations, institutions of learning and many of such which draw membership from many different countries.

Mother Africa Movement wants to focus on social integration as the sure way of addressing the numerous ills that affect the continent.

Africa is a continent of poverty, disease, illiteracy, political malgovernance, endless conflicts and almost all other ills that one may imagine of. What is more, even as many would lament that Africa is colonized continent, some African leaders still think and even attempt colonizing other African countries. Think of the case of Western Sahara and Morocco!

Mother Africa Movement want to create a forum for ordinary Africans to meet freely and share their skills and experiences with the view of fostering mutual trust amongst them. This will be done by organizing conferences, workshops, workcamps and cross cultural exchanges that will serve as avenues for sowing the seeds for inter- and intrastate mutual trust. It is our hope that in the long run, this will stump out the conflicts in the continent and our resources will be well managed to serve our needs.

Mother Africa invites comments and other contributions from both Africans and non-Africans who believe in the future of Africa, especially in this area of social integration.
